Prepare the Way is an anthem arranged from an original hymn tune I wrote in 2013 called “Advent,” which I composed while studying hymnology in the doctoral program in choral music at the University of Southern California. The influence of Anglican church music composers such as Ralph Vaughn Williams and William Walton can be heard in the modal harmonies and triumphant rhythms through the anthem. The piano part, with its use of octave displacement and colorful, cinematic effects, was inspired by Aaron Copland, John Williams, and my teacher Morten Lauridsen.
